Electric Guitar Information & History
*An electric guitar is a type of guitar that uses pickups to convert the vibration of its steel-cored strings into an electrical current, which is made louder with an instrument amplifier and a speaker. The signal that comes from the guitar is sometimes electronically altered with guitar effects such as reverb or distortion. While most electric guitars have six strings, seven-string instruments are used by some jazz guitarists and metal guitarists, and 12-string electric guitars (with six pairs of strings, four of which are tuned in octaves) are used in genres such as jangle pop and rock.
The electric guitar was first used by jazz guitarists, who used amplified hollow-bodied instruments to get a louder sound in Swing-era big bands. The earliest electric guitars were hollow bodied acoustic instruments with tungsten pickups made by the "Rickenbacker" company in 1931. While one of the first solid-body guitars was invented by Les Paul, the first commercially successful solid-body electric guitar was the Fender Esquire (1950). The electric guitar was a key instrument in the development of many musical styles that emerged since the late 1940s, such as Chicago blues, early rock and roll and rockabilly, and 1960s blues rock. It is also used in a range of other genres, including country music, ambient (or "new-age"), and in some contemporary classical music.
The main reason for the electric guitar is volume. Guitar players had trouble being heard using acoustic guitars. They would place a mic near the sound holes to get enough volume. The first electric guitars where spanish style acoustic guitars like that of the Gibson ES-150. They where hollow body guitars with two 'F' holes and a pickup placed under the strings between the bridge and where the neck was attached. The ES stands for 'Electic Spanish'.
The first hollowbody electric guitar for sale was by Rickenbacker in 1932. It was shaped like an acoustic guitar and had a two tone sunburst finish with one single coil pickup mounted near the neck below the strings.
The first solid body electric is from Rickenbacker. It was based on their Bakelite Steel guitar. In 1937 they came out with the Vibrola Spanish Electric which was based on the model 'B' (Bakelite Model).
In 1939 Les Paul started work on his version of the solid body electric which is called the 'LOG'. Les Paul placed the pickup from a phonograph player and the telephone mouthpiece under the strings on early prototype models. The guitar looked like a 4x4 piece of wood about the length of an acoustic guitar body. On this were attached two single coil pickups, a bridge with tremolo, and the neck. To make the guitar look more presentable, he cut an epiphone spruce body in half and placed one half on top and the other beneath the 'LOG'. This gave the appearence of an acoustic guitar, but it didn't have the feedback problems associated with hollow body electrics. Les Paul started on this guitar in 1939 and brought it to Gibson in 1941.
The Solid Body Electric Guitar didn't commercially appear until the early 1950's, by Leo Fender. The Fender Telecaster was originally the Esquire and Broadcaster, finally changed to Telecaster. The fender Stratocaster was introduced in mid 1954.
Electric Guitars of today are based on the same principles and have been improved significantly.
Gibson and Fender are the largest and most recognized guitar manufactuerers in the world. The Fender Stratocaster was first introduced in 1954 and is still one of the top selling electric guitars. *Source: Wikipedia |
