The Pollmann Company existed from 1848 until 1924. They were most famous for their Mandoline Banjo which was a flatback mandolin body with a 5-string banjo neck. It was a very popular parlor instrument in its day. This is a *pony banjo* with a 10 inch calfskin head (original as far as I can tell) and an overall length of 33 inches. It originally came with a leather scabbard style case (opened from the end) that had a large loop that allowed it to be hung from the saddle pommel of a walking horse. The previous owners threw the case away because it was moldy and they did not know how to clean it (kinda makes me want to cry). They also attempted to re-string it with a set of modern banjo strings and tune it as if it were a Bluegrass instrument. They pulled the original Iveroid (early acetate plastic) tailpiece apart. This instrument was made when steel strings for banjo did not exist and was originally strung with gut strings (my cats dont seem to like it when I play this thing). I added a StewMac *no knot* and some nylgut strings so I could play it. These instruments were tuned to C or D with the same intervals as the Bluegrass G tuning. The tuners are original black bean style friction type and actually work quite well. The bridge is modern. Note that the top lug nearest the neck has been removed to facilitate clawhammer style playing. That\'s how it came. The frets and ebony fingerboard are in fantastic condition for an instrument of this age but as in all older instruments there has been some shrinkage in the wood in the neck that has caused the frets to protrude. There are also a couple of frets that could stand re-glueing. This ships in a standard chipboard tenor banjo case but a lite case style old time banjo case is available for an additional $55. They were an upper class Teisco made between 1963 and 1965. The pickups are very close to the highly regarded *gold foil* D Armonds. This instrument is in good condition with very little checking and only a few dings. The electronics have been cleaned and are quiet and function as designed. The tuners are in working condition as is the truss rod. The action is good *as is* but can be improved. The frets and fretboard show little wear but several of the inlay dots have retreated tnto the neck common for these instruments. Also note in pic #5 that the well for the trem arm has been broken. A good reason to remove the spring and play it as a hard tail. Now, take a good look at pics #9 through #12. There has been a hole drilled through the headstock and it looks like a tuner has been installed at the high *E* and then removed and filled. Ya never know what people are thinkn. Broman was a marketing company that had guitars made by several Mid-Western companies including Kay, Oscar Schmidt (Stella), and Regal. The construction details on this guitar are almost identical to my labeled Regal. The only big difference is the headstock overlay. The top is spruce, the back and sides maple, the fingerboard is ebony with real MOP inlay. The neck is three piece maple with a stringer that is either mahogany or walnut. The neck is a deep \"C\" with plenty of cross section. The bone nut is original. The instrument is structurally sound with a good neck set. The action is good over the entire fretboard and the frets have been leveled. There is plenty of room to lower the action but it\'s just right for chord melody as it is, It\'s currently set up with light guage flatwound strings and really projects a well balanced tone with a pick or fingerstyle. When we got this guitar the finish had been partly removed. We finished the job and shot the guitar with a light coat of flat sealer. It sounded so good that way that\'s where we stopped. It was purchased used in Philadelphia in 1964 and spent the next 20 years on the Philly/ South Jersey R&B circuit and some time in the AME Church. After the owners death it was given to his nephew who moved to Nashville in the late 80s to become part of the citys soul scene. In the late 70s the owner decided to re-finish the bass. He removed the original finish but got a call and re-assembled the bass without any finish. He played it like that until he died. His little finger wore a well into the body below the G string (see pic #3). At some point the tone pot was broken off and replaced along with the capacitor. All of the other electronics are original. The lower edge of the neck shows SIGNIFICANT scalloping from play wear. We did a nitro refin on the body and added a reproduction decal to the headstock. What finish there is remaining on the neck is original. The backplate for the neck is period but not original. The frets have been leveled. This bass plays well, sounds incredible and looks fantastic. We can ship this in a new high quality hardshell or a gig bag, buyers choice.
