Phishing Attempts Reporting

The nascent Phishing Incident Reporting and Termination project sponsored by CastleCops and Sunbelt Software encourages people to report phishing attempts so they can be tracked down and terminated.

CastleCops calls the project Fried Phish on its website. Expanded information about the project on its wiki described the process for reporting phishing attempts and how the project will help combat them.

"The reason this group was formed is to give consumers direct access to a dedicated task force that will take immediate and aggressive action to shutting down phishing sites," Paul Laudanski, president of CastleCops, said in a statement.

Phishing attempts focus on grifting personal information from people, especially financial information. Thousands of emails that purportedly come from legitimate banking or credit card institutions quietly redirect a user to a lookalike site. The most sophisticated ones capture information and redirect the user request to the legitimate site, where the user is then logged in to the site and probably won't realize what just happened.

PIRT - Phishing Incident Reporting Termination

PIRT gives users the opportunity to report phishing attempts, and have those reports generate action to shut down phishing attempts at their source.

Most people know that old line that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But even so, online Internet scams rake in billions of dollars. Everyday, people all over the world are tempted by one of literally hundreds of easy-money promises received in an e-mail.

The Nigeria Connection - An especially dangerous scam involves Nigeria. Here’s how it works: You receive e-mail from someone in Nigeria who says that he wants to purchase your instrument and he is owed money by an associate in America, he will issue you a bank check, drawn on a US Bank (which is bogus) for an amount more than you are asking for your instrument.

FRAUD BULLETIN - please be EXTREMELY WARY of offers by distant strangers to send you a high value (but counterfeit) cashier's check, and then have you wire the balance to them. These offers are sometimes emailed to Musicians Buy Line posters, often as offers for sale items. Banks will cash these counterfeit checks, but then hold you responsible for the funds when the check fails to clear!

If you have been victimized, you can contact the FTC toll-free at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357) or use the complaint form at www.ftc.gov, or call the Canadian PhoneBusters hotline toll-free at 1-888-495-8501.

This scam is now originating from places other than Nigeria.

Remember, the Internet can be a dangerous place – but only if you let it. If it looks fishy – hit the delete button and move on.

What's Up! Please – be smarter than them.
